Kevin McCarthy Offers Concessions in Bid for House Speaker

It seems that the drama over the Speaker of the House position is far from over, as Kevin McCarthy still lacks the votes to secure the role. In an effort to win over his critics, McCarthy has offered a number of concessions, including a one-member “motion to vacate” rule, seats on the Rules Committee for the Freedom Caucus, a vote on term limits, and major changes to the appropriations process. Despite these efforts, there are still 20 “no” votes against McCarthy, leading some to speculate that the drama could continue into next week. The group opposing McCarthy’s ascension to the Speaker position have a list of grievances with party leadership, including anger over uniparty compromises with Democrats and doubt over McCarthy’s conservatism. It remains to be seen if McCarthy will be able to win over enough of his colleagues to secure the role of Speaker of the House.
